Audio Students visit Dolby in Soho
Third year Media Technology students studying Audio Systems Design and Audio Post Production had a good start to November with a trip to Dolby’s site in Soho Square. Dolby run a film school programme and invited students from a number of institutions to attend a series of lectures and demonstrations. It was a great opportunity for the students to see how the theory they have been learning is applied in the real world as well as giving them an opportunity to network with industry professionals and peers from similar course. Solent has an established relationship with Dolby having supplied several interns and graduates in recent years.
The day reviewed the history of film sound and progressed all the way through to their most recent object-based format ‘Dolby Atmos’. The students discussed the differences between mixing for the home and theatre environment, including the use of mastering suites and channel routing. Solent has their own Atmos cinema (pictured above) including a mastering and rendering system so it was useful for the students to see a similar installation at the home of the creators.
Many thanks to Senior Sound Consultant James Shannon and Dolby Europe for hosting us.
