What are Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs)?

HTQs provide vocational training for students in higher education. We have a range of Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Foundation Degrees in Science (FdSc) courses and will be running our HTQs from September 2024.

HTQs have been developed by the Department of Education to recognise these qualifications in plugging the skills gaps and boost access to more high-quality training alternatives in higher education.

Solent University has been successful in receiving funding from the government’s Higher Technical Education Provider Growth Fund, to develop these exciting new qualifications.

They have been created to support people to study more flexibly at different points throughout their lives – helping them to secure high-skilled, high-paid jobs. Unlike apprenticeships, those studying a HTQ will not need to be sponsored by an employer.

They will provide technical skills training alongside an academic qualification such as a HNC or FdSc.

Who are they for?

HTQs are for those who want vocational training as part of their career path. Students can progress on from their Technical Qualifications to gain a deeper knowledge of the subject area at a higher level.

They are also for mature learners who want to upskill or retrain in these subject areas to enhance their career. We welcome mature learners who have been out of education for a while and offer support to their learning and academic skills.
