Harry the HATS and the Chamber of Silence
Staff from Solent Acoustics and Media Technology recently acquired a new chamber for use during test and measurement.
The new chamber differs from the larger anechoic chamber that is already in place, as it is fully anechoic, instead of hemi-anechoic. This means that the floor is also absorbent, and so provides a fully spherical anechoic space, as opposed to a hemisphere in a hemi-anechoic chamber. The chamber is effectively absorbent down to 300 Hz, and is useful for all kinds of smaller-scale measurements that require a quiet or anechoic environment, especially testing involving the Head and Torso Simulator (HATS) systems. The chamber weighs roughly 800 kg, and was installed by the Solent Acoustics team this summer after collecting it from Fleet.Â
