SMPTE Student Chapter : Welcome to SMPTE
Members of the student chapter of SMPTE met this afternoon for their first meeting of the academic year. It was great to welcome several new members to the chapter - some having just started at Solent as well as others from higher year groups that have recently decided to take advantage of the benefits of a professional society.
The meeting was intended as an introduction to SMPTE and the industry that it serves. We were joined by Peter Weitzel Honorary Treasure/Secretary for SMPTE UK, Peter Wilson from HD Digital and Cinema as well as Richard Bailey and Mark Couto from Techex. It was especially nice to catch up with Mark as a graduate of the Media Technology Programme. The panel discussed their professional journeys and spoke passionately about the industry and the opportunities it affords. Peter Weitzel introduced the three tenants of SMPTE of Membership, Standardisation and Education.

The students were very interested in the insights offered and conversation soon moved on to future technologies and developments. It was great to see such a good turnout and we'd like to extend our thanks to the panel for giving up their time. We also introduced our new student managers: Chair Alex Snell and Treasurer/Secretary Marco Campagnuolo.
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is an international organisation focussed on developing the next-generation of standards for the cinema and television industries. The Media Technology Programme hosts one of a handful of Student Chapters, which gives students access to industry expertise through chapter and section meetings as well as training opportunities.
