A Journey Through Audio Production at Solent University
By Bethany Harrison
As a third-year Media Production student at Solent University, my academic journey has been a rich blend of theoretical learning and practical application, particularly in audio production. My studies focus on equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to produce professional-quality audio content, from live programmes to mobile storytelling. This hands-on approach has allowed me to experiment creatively while gaining technical expertise.
One of the most impactful modules I’ve taken is Audio: Live Stories, which emphasises working collaboratively to produce and deliver live radio or podcast-style content. This real-time experience mirrors the demands of the professional world, requiring sharp problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt quickly under pressure. It’s an excellent foundation for understanding how to manage complex audio projects effectively.
The Podcasting module builds on this by teaching us to craft engaging content for niche audiences. It focuses on creating compelling narratives supported by immersive soundscapes that elevate the storytelling experience. The module also explores emerging opportunities in the audio industry, such as distribution platforms and audience targeting, ensuring that students are prepared to navigate the evolving media landscape.
Another highlight is Mobile Audio Storytelling, a module that introduces us to the creation of aurally rich narratives tailored for mobile platforms. Using advanced software and equipment, we learn to craft immersive audio experiences that engage listeners in innovative ways. This module pushes us to experiment with sound design and think outside the box, preparing us for the exciting possibilities of audio storytelling in the digital age.
Exploring Plot Armour and Political Lore: Plague of Purrgils Podcast
The Plague of Purrgils podcast takes listeners on an exciting journey through the political intricacies and narrative design of Star Wars. In this episode, I tackle the fascinating character of Thrawn, a master strategist whose impact on the Galactic Empire is undeniable. Together with my guest, I examine whether Thrawn’s defeats were due to his own missteps or the infamous "plot armour" often used to protect the story’s protagonists. By blending critical analysis with a love for the Star Wars universe, the podcast dives deep into the complexities of storytelling and challenges conventional perspectives on Thrawn’s legacy.
The podcast represents a personal and professional milestone for me, combining my love for Star Wars with the skills I’ve developed during my studies. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I’ve always been intrigued by the concept of plot armour and its role in shaping the story’s trajectory. Given the chance to create a podcast on any subject, I knew I wanted to explore this topic and dive into the complexities of Thrawn’s character.
Conclusion
Creating the podcast was a rewarding experience that challenged me to apply my knowledge in storytelling and sound design. I wanted listeners to feel immersed in the Star Wars universe while engaging critically with its narrative choices. This meant crafting detailed soundscapes, structuring a compelling discussion, and using professional-grade audio equipment to ensure high production value.
This project has been a perfect example of how personal passions can enhance academic work. Through Plague of Purrgils, I’ve not only showcased my abilities as an audio storyteller but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate storytelling that makes Star Wars so beloved. It’s a testament to the power of merging creativity and technical skill, and it’s a journey I’m excited to continue.
