BREAKDOWN – Short Film by Maria Autunez
It’s a topic we’re all too familiar with by now, COVID-19 and lockdown. There’s no doubt in saying that the past almost two years have been a struggle with our lives taking a drastic turn at the flick of a switch. One day we were out interacting with anyone and everyone, and the next we can’t even see our own family. Even without this isolation, moving to a different country away from family, friends and all sense of familiarity is difficult.
During this short film created by Maria Autunez, we watch as 22 year old Bea navigates her day to day life as a graphic designer in England as the country goes into lockdown for an undetermined period of time. Not only does it appear she lives alone, but she is also stuck in a country that is foreign to her. Living in a different country to your family is tough enough, but having to do so when the world is falling apart is an entirely different type of worry.
It’s clear that Bea has a very good relationship with her Grandmother; ensuring she is keeping safe from the dangers of COVID and she is generally doing well. All is seemingly well with Bea, until it’s not. Everything comes crumbling down at once for Bea and, understandably, it’s difficult for her to take in. We are taken into Bea’s mind as she walks along the sand, completely secluded from the rest of the world. She can’t help but feel that everything that went wrong was her fault.
Will Bea drown in her own guilt, or can she reach out for her life boat? Watch the video down below.
