Ego - Morgan Warren

4 March 2022

According to Morgan Warren, we’re living “in our contemporary society, we can be whomever we want.” As long we dress for it. She’s not mistaken. Rachel Zoe, an American Designer, even expressed, “style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Therefore, Morgan determined to explore this idea of allowing her audience to speculate about her characters’ type. Without seeing the complexity of their skin and bone structure. It is because Morgan believes “we express ourselves with our self-image.” Therefore, it is common to see people fitting in a group of people who dress similarly to them, just like how you look for the clothes that fit you perfectly.

Moreover, Morgan implies, “we also often stereotype others by the image they portray to the outside world.” It’s true. Once a girl said to me that she wanted to see what was in my wardrobe. I didn’t really get why. But now I do because she wants to know what sort of person I am. Therefore, “if we control how we are seen, we can become anyone we want to be.” Morgan suggested. In addition, eight times Academy Award winner and one of the most influential film costume designers of all time, Edith Head, once stated, “you can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” So, if you want to be a designer, filmmaker, media creator, lecturer, or anything you want to be. Start dressing and acting like that sort of person. Because naturally, you will end up in that group. If not, they will come and approach you. If you’re having a bad day, just remember Bill Cunningham, New York Times fashion photographer, once said, “fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life.” So, let’s show the world what sort of person you really are.

Go check Morgan Warren’s ‘Ego’ photography series, where she explores the fashion industry and its effect on our mood and behaviour. She creates stories for her characters that reflect her own personal alter ego. These different personas help her understand her own feelings and give a voice to her internal dialogue.
