"Seskaro" by Charles Thom

23 February 2024

Nestled in the icy embrace of the Bothnian Bay, Seskarö stands as a testament to resilience and beauty in the face of harsh conditions. This small island, straddling the border of Finland and Sweden, has long been overlooked by mainstream media, its 20km² expanse home to just 491 residents who endure brutal winters and limited daylight hours.

"Seskarö," a photographic project, seeks to illuminate the subtle nuances of life on this remote island. In a world often viewed through the lens of the "tourist gaze," the project endeavours to capture the everyday moments that define existence for its inhabitants. From the storied history of lumber and fishing to the challenges posed by climate change, each image contributes to a rich tapestry, offering outsiders a glimpse into a world rarely seen.

As temperatures plummet and snow blankets the landscape, the resilience of both residents and wildlife is put to the test. Yet, amidst the hardships, there is a sense of hope—a belief that with the adoption of sustainable practices, the island's unique way of life can endure.

Produced over three months of deep Swedish winter, "Seskarö" serves as a visual testament to the beauty found in the ordinary. Through the lens of one of our student, viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of Seskarö, to study its intricacies, and to appreciate the resilience of its people. As the images speak volumes, there is no need for additional text—a silent ode to the power of photography to convey emotion and meaning.

In the frozen expanse of Seskarö, a story unfolds—one of hardship, beauty, and hope. Through "Seskarö," we are reminded of the importance of preserving our fragile world and cherishing the communities that call it home. Thanks, for allowing us to embark on this visual journey.
