Stepping up with Next Step 8
The Next Step 8 was a unique opportunity for students to gain insight into the media industry and develop employability skills. This student-led mini-conference featured panel Q&A sessions with alumni and industry professionals, giving attendees the chance to learn from those who have successfully navigated the industry.
Organised by students on the Media Production programme at Solent University the organising team invited recent graduates to talk about their experience of getting started in their chosen creative career.
Peace Olabode (Production Assistant at Netflix), Chloe Webb (Digital Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator at Chichester Cathedral), Charlie Harrison (Assistant Development Producer at Global), Emma Weeks (PR Account Executive at Bubble Agency) and Luke Simcock (Social and Digital Content Manager at Reading Rockets Basketball) shared their insights with current students.

The media industry is notoriously difficult to break into, with competition for jobs often fierce. This is where The Next Step comes in - by providing a platform for students to learn from those who have gone before them, the conference offers valuable guidance and support to those looking to enter the field.
The panels covered a range of topics, from networking and building a personal brand to finding job opportunities and developing key skills such as communication and creativity. Attendees will hear from a diverse range of speakers, with experience in fields such as journalism, broadcasting, marketing, and public relations.
But The Next Step 8 isn't just about listening to panels - it's also an opportunity for students to get involved and develop their own skills. The conference offered a range of interactive workshops and activities, designed to help students build confidence and develop practical skills such as pitching ideas and creating a portfolio.
Perhaps most importantly, The Next Step 8 was a chance for students to connect with others who share their interests and passions. Networking is a key part of the media industry, and the conference provided a supportive and inclusive environment for students to meet and learn from one another.
The Next Step 8 was an unmissable opportunity for any student looking to enter the media industry. If you're serious about a career in media, make sure you book your place at The Next Step 9 in March 2024.
