Motivation over Christmas
As Christmas lights appear and lectures begin to focus on 2021 deadlines, it can be hard to maintain motivation over the Christmas period. Enjoying the festivities and having fun with your loved ones is important, however if you want to avoid entering the new year with too many deadlines and not enough time then read on for my top five tips on staying motivated over Christmas!
Tip one: Pre-plan
Taking the time to pre-plan the week ahead is key, especially if you have multiple assignments. I spend some time on Sundays (no, really I do!) creating a ‘study timetable’ for the week ahead. This ensures that I don’t just focus on the subjects I really enjoy and procrastinate on those trickier assignments. This also gives me the chance to get ahead on assignments that are due slightly later. Pre-planning breaks down your workload and enables you to prioritise and not get overwhelmed!
Tip two: Make lists
I use lists for everything. There is nothing more satisfying then ticking off a to-do list and feeling a sense of achievement. I always make my lists with bright colours and pin them up so I can see them clearly - this has saved me from missing important video calls more times than I care to admit!
As well as your weekly plan, remember to include things you enjoy in your lists such as having a long hot bath or a virtual quiz night!
Tip three: Be realistic
When pre-planning your week make sure you’re setting achievable goals. It can be easy to expect too much of yourself and then beat yourself up when you don’t complete your unrealistic seven hours of pre-planned study! Set yourself realistic study periods and consider how you study best. For me, I focus on completing a minimum of two to three hours of study per weekday and if I achieve more than that - it’s a bonus!
Tip four: Be kind to yourself
Working on assignments alone can be stressful and it can be easy to start feeling overwhelmed. Be kind to yourself and remember to take regular breaks. I normally break every hour – just don’t forget to time yourself! Make sure you celebrate the small wins and give yourself treats when you take breaks. My favourite treats are biscuits to keep my sugar levels up!
Don’t forget to reach out if you’re struggling with your work – I have online group chats with my course mates which really helps us maintain contact and is a safe place to ask questions. If you need help or support from the university then don’t forget your lecturers or additional student support services are only an email away – don’t suffer in silence!
Also, it’s important to remember the world is a strange place at the moment so don’t be too hard on yourself – you’ve got this!
Tip Five: Remember to have fun!
Although completing university work during the festive period is important, don’t forget to have fun (safely!) with your loved ones this Christmas. Maintaining a work-life balance during your time at university is essential – so no essay writing on Christmas Day!
I hope you find my top five tips on how to stay motivated over Christmas helpful – I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Studies!
