Our 30 years’ experience of delivering construction management training has helped us to develop a course that works for both employees and employers. Students train for a single day each week throughout the academic year, applying what they have learnt directly to their day-to-day work and continuing to be an asset in the workplace.
Inspiring, challenging and professionally accredited – our programme offers a varied curriculum based on the key themes of management, technology and professionalism. You’ll develop valuable skills and work closely with industry partners, experienced tutors and the latest in construction technology.
Building on your existing HNC or HND qualification, you’ll develop a full understanding of the economic considerations and the industry’s legal framework. Extensive industry involvement ensures you’ll have a strong working knowledge of the technology and management techniques being used in the sector today. To support this, you’ll undertake challenging live briefs to help develop your teamwork, project management, problem-solving, decision-making and negotiation skills.
The course content is regularly reviewed to meet industry and professional requirements, and covers emerging topics in the field of construction management to ensure your learning is right up to date.
Our accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Building demonstrates that the course meets strict standards set by the industry itself. It also gives you the chance to work towards additional professional qualifications alongside your ongoing degree studies.

This course is aimed specifically at construction industry professionals who have already studied at HNC/D level (or equivalent) and are now looking to progress to a full degree. Candidates should already be working in a relevant area of the construction industry and have an ambition to take on more senior roles.

The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.
Students make use of modern construction laboratories, a dedicated drawing studio and a range of levelling/surveying equipment (total stations). Students also have the opportunity to work in the built environment studio centre.
This modern studio space has been developed to give students access to an environment which mirrors the feel and atmosphere of a working professional studio. This encourages students from various different built environment courses to come together and collaborate on multidisciplinary projects, just as they would in the workplace.
This module covers a range of activities that promote effective decision-making and positive business performance within construction industries, including; financial performance analysis techniques, profit and loss forecasting, project and head office cash flow analysis and general overheads budgeting.
This module will enable you acquire a deeper understanding of construction technology principles at a more advanced level. The technology of high-rise construction, including quality aspects, is the central focus.
This module investigates how the construction industry can achieve sustainable outcomes during the design, construction, operation and end of life of a project.

You will be introduced to the commercial activities both at pre and post contract stage focusing on the role of the contractor’s quantity surveyor.

Directors of local and national construction companies, as well as representatives from government bodies, contribute to the course with guest lectures, site visits and live case studies. This provides a real-life learning environment and unique research opportunities. We also have visits from local area planning officers, construction directors and government agencies.
Through our network of employers you will be supported and encouraged to do a work placement to gain real work experience. Organisations that we have close links with include Southampton City Council, Capita Symonds, Evolution 5, Balfour Beatty, Barrett Homes, Linden Homes, Brymor Contractors and Babcock International.
You’ll also benefit from professional accreditation by the CIOB. This means the course meets the standards set by employers, and enables you to take steps towards gaining professional qualifications, even before you’ve graduated.
Starting salary: 25,000 to £35,000
With experience, you can earn around £35,000 to £55,000. Salaries at management level range from around £50,000 to in excess of £80,000.
Starting salary: £27,000 to £33,000
Experienced construction managers can earn between £33,000 and £55,000. Senior and chartered construction managers can earn in the region of £50,000 to £85,000.
Starting salary: £18,000 to £25,000
With experience, in roles such as principal planner and team leader, salaries can reach £30,000 to £45,000. Chief planning officers, heads of departments and directors can earn salaries of more than £55,000.

Solent EU Welcome Scholarship (Fee Discount)
This scholarship is available to students from an EU country, with EU nationality, who are applying for an undergraduate course starting in September 2025. The scholarship will reduce your tuition fees to £10,500.

Cost of living support
At Solent, we understand that the cost of living crisis may be of some concern. To help, we've put together some detailed information to show what support is available and how to make your money go further.
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

The part-time route allows direct entry to year three of the full five-year part-time course. Applicants must hold a HNC in a relevant subject, or equivalent.
Attendance on campus is approximately one day per week, 9am to 5pm.
It is desirable for applying students to be employed within the construction industry. Students will need to have a supporting reference from an employer as part of their application.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.
Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.
