‘Sapient Fungi’ is a series of double exposures that merges images of various types of fungi with human portraits. The aim of this project is to visualize and explore the complex and fascinating relationship between humanity and fungi. The overall aim is to deconstruct the myth of human supremacy and to highlight the importance of cohabitation amongst two distinctly different species.

Fungi are everywhere. They are inside us and around us; they sustain us and all that we depend upon. Ingested as tasty culinary ingredients or as psychedelic mushrooms that can help treat mental illnesses and degenerative diseases. Other species can clean up oil spills, break down pesticides and even regenerate nuclear waste. New developments and research have found properties that could forever eradicate animal agriculture or the need for single-use plastics. ‘Sapient Fungi’ uncovers how, in this time of extreme ecological degradation, exploiting this kingdom of living organisms in many different ways, might present solutions to some of humanity’s greatest problems.
