Dan Jones started his construction management apprenticeship in September 2018, joining straight from completing his A-levels. He was awarded CIOB 'Apprentice of the Month' in December 2023, we caught up with him to find out about his apprenticeship experience.
Why did you decide to study an apprenticeship?
The industry was always of interest to me - completing two weeks’ work experience with two separate developers between the first and second year of college. Making contact with one of those developers to enquire about the potential of a degree apprenticeship led to me starting at Miller and beginning the apprenticeship.
What were your personal goals on entering the apprenticeship?
I’d always wanted to achieve a degree but did not want to study full-time - this is partly due to wanting industry experience, but also the full-time education did not interest me.
How has the apprenticeship moved you towards achieving those goals?
Completing my degree one day a week at Solent University gave me a sound background of knowledge to then put to the test, fulfilling my role as a trainee surveyor. Applying the knowledge practically helped develop my understanding of the role; similarly, the experience gained gave me a better understanding of the theories taught at university.
How has the apprenticeship benefitted you in the workplace?
The apprenticeship has helped me develop in my role and gain promotion to surveyor in July 2022. It has helped move my career along while also gaining a qualification to fall back on and support my CV. I would recommend the degree apprenticeship route.
