The ultimate Clearing guide

We've created the ultimate guide to help you understand what Clearing is and what you need to do.

Apply through Clearing

What is Clearing?

Clearing happens every year as part of the UCAS application process. It is there to help you find a place at university if:

  • you haven’t applied to uni, but would like to go,
  • you’ve applied but haven’t got any offers,
  • after results day, you didn’t meet the conditions of your offer, or
  • you’ve declined all your offers, or changed your mind.

If you have applied to university, you'll have to wait until results day to see if you've been offered a place. However, even if you have a place, you can still change your mind and apply for a different university or course through Clearing.

Clearing opens Friday 5 July and closes 21 October 2024.

I'm thinking about Clearing because...

Don’t panic - you’re not alone, thousands of students go through clearing each year, for lots of different reasons. Whatever brings you here, whatever area you’re interested in studying, you’ll be able to find a course that fits.

Clearing top tips

  • Don’t panic - thousands of students go through clearing each year.
  • Keep an open mind. Popular degrees can fill up fast, so you might not always be able to get a place on a specific course. But there are usually similar options available.
  • Research unis, not just courses. Look on UCAS, visit uni websites, talk to friends, family or teachers, or visit websites like The Student Room.
  • Be prepared. When you’re ready to call a clearing hotline, have all of your qualifications and your personal statement ready.
  • When you call, ask questions! It’s a great chance to learn what it’s like to be a student there.
  • Visit universities. Lots of unis run Clearing open days, so you can meet other new students and get a feel for the place.
  • Don’t rush. Take your time to find a course that’s really right for you – don’t feel pressured into making a decision.

Applying for a course through Clearing

  • 1. Check UCAS Hub. Here you can see the status of your applications. If you’re in Clearing it will tell you that you are and there will be a button saying ‘Add a Clearing choice’.
  • 2. Grab a pen and paper – you’re going to need to jot down a few things: your UCAS application number; your qualifications and how much they equal in tariff points; any questions you may have about the course.
  • 3. Pick up the phone. Start calling your university choices to see if they have space and if you are eligible to apply. They will give you your next steps on what to do. And there are other ways to contact the universities you’ve chosen – at Solent we’re available by WhatsApp, live chat, Twitter, Facebook AND Snapchat.
