At Southampton Solent University, we’re all about connecting our students to opportunities which enhance their learning and help shape their future. We did just that this term, when we welcomed Heathrow Airport onto campus.
When it comes to future-ready teaching and learning, Solent’s Department of Business and Law collaborates with businesses of all sizes to offer insight into the way an organisation works (and thrives) in practice.
At a unique masterclass event hosted by Heathrow Airport in the first term of the 2024/25 academic year, second year undegrads studying BSc (Hons) Business Management, BSc (Hons) Business Management with Digital Technologies, BSc (Hons) Business Management with Finance, BSc (Hons) Business Management with Marketing and BSc (Hons) International Business Management, took part in a day of simulated activities offering a look at how the airport – which welcomed more than 79 million passengers in 2023 – operates successfully.
The day, which was hosted by Heathrow’s Operations and Resilience team, offered an interactive programme of simulated workshops, informative talks, and an opportunity for students to ask the professionals what it’s like to work for such a busy organisation. One student said:
“I learned a lot about planning different scenarios. It made me want to be part of such a dynamic environment.”
The masterclass not only lifted the curtain on the exciting world of aviation, but helped students gain a better understanding of the key skills employers are after, including adaptability, decision-making and teamwork. Business and Management lecturer, Uje Daniel Apeji, said:
“This was a very engaging and interactive event. It showcased the real-world complexities of operations management, and it was fantastic to see our students so involved and enthusiastic.”
This event was just one of many designed to boost student learning and equip them with the tools they need to thrive in the world of work. With industry connections, Solent utilises its networks to bring sought-after experiences to the heart of campus, giving students a strong footing for success in their future careers.
Emma Russel, a representative from Heathrow Airport team said: "It was great to see the students fully engaged, assessing different risks and adapting their responses. We always enjoy working with Solent Business School and witnessing such enthusiasm and critical thinking."
