Law student wins the Judicial/ADR Liaison Committee’s essay writing competition.
Law student Amy Cullen is getting the opportunity to complete an observership of commercial mediation with Bill Wood QC of the Brick Court Chambers, after winning the Judicial/ADR Liaison Committee’s ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) essay writing competition.
Amy’s essay was titled, 'The Impact of Covid-19 on the development of ADR in the UK’. It focussed, not on the effect of Covid-19 on ADR, but specifically the development.
Upon hearing the news about her winning entry, she said, " I am really delighted to have won the competition and very grateful to get the opportunity to spend a day with a QC from Brick Court Chambers observing a mediation.”
Amy always had an interest in law, “I have been involved in representing communities where I have lived and finally, now my children are older, I thought that having a degree in law would assist me in my knowledge”, she says.
“I am enjoying the challenge of study after many years out of education. The lecturers are very supportive and knowledgeable”, she adds.
Going into her final year, Amy is looking forward to studying more areas, such as family law.
“When I started the degree, it was with the aim of going into practice as either a Barrister or a Solicitor Advocate. I have since been discovered that many doors are open when you have a background in law, and I am exploring these opportunities. I qualified as a civil mediator last year and am considering training as a family mediator”, she says.
Commenting on the opportunity, Bill Wood QC, said, “The Essay Competition is a great initiative. My chambers are delighted to be involved. I am greatly looking forward to working with Amy on a mediation. Many congratulations to all the winners.”
Kevin Rogers, Director of Solent Law School says, “I’m delighted with Amy’s success – it really is a testament to her hard work and diligence that she won this award. I’ve very grateful to the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman and Brick Court Chambers for giving our students the opportunity to excel and show what they can do!”
