From war torn countries to the challenges of climate change, people are being forced to flee homes and re-build lives in new communities.

The Wilberforce Dialogue is an annual event hosted by the University in recognition of the Wilberforce family, who championed social justice and equality. This event aims to explore a relevant social or environmental theme, encouraging discussion and debate while also recognising the University’s Faith Network. In recognition of the University’s commitment to becoming a University of Sanctuary this year’s Wilberforce Dialogue will take place during Refugee Week (20–24 June) and focuses on the theme of ‘Can safe passage really exist?’

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre’s 2021 Global Report on Internal Displacement estimated that in 2020 alone around 40.5 million new displacements were recorded. International media, political policies and local histories can portray and influence our thoughts around what constitutes safe passage from displacement, but can safe passage really exist?

Hosted by Professor Peter Lloyd, Dean of Solent’s Faculty of Creative Industries, Architecture and Engineering this community event will explore the lived experiences of those who have secured sanctuary and what safe passage would really mean.

Panellists include:

  • Annie Karuimbo, Sanctuary Ambassador with City of Sanctuary, British Red Cross Voice Ambassador & Sanctuary in Politics Graduate.
  • Angela Cohen, Chair of the 45 Aid Society.
  • Revd. Steve Tinning, Public Issues Enabler, The Baptist Union of Great Britain.

There will be opportunities for the audience to ask questions to the panellist throughout the evening.

We look forward to welcoming you for what will be a thought provoking evening of discussion and debate.
