Five ways to settle into Southampton

12 September 2024

As the 2024/25 academic year begins, we know that, as a new student, you're probably feeling a whole range of emotions. From excitement to nervousness - quite likely all at the same time - it's totally normal to be apprehensive about moving to a new city to live and study.

Wondering how you might make Southampton your new home? Here's five quick and simple tips for settling in.

Embrace being a tourist

One of the best things about moving somewhere new is the fact you get to experience it all for the first time. There is no better time to get curious than in your first weeks of university; so, act like you're on holiday and get walking around Southampton. Take in all the sights, sounds and smells of your new home, just like you would on a city break.

Get to know your neighbours

The best thing about starting out somewhere new for university is the knowledge that you're not alone. Whenever you feel a bit nervous, remember that you're going to be surrounded by hundreds of people in the same position. Start local - get to know the people in your halls or student house, as well as your course. Together, you can tour the city and settle in a as a community.

Having plans in place with those you're closest to will help ease your transition and give you something to look forward to!

Be open to change

Finally - and we know it isn't always easy - be open to embracing the new. With change comes uncertainty, but approaching it with positivity is a good way to go.
