Warsash Maritime School, part of Southampton Solent University, is taking the lead when it comes to shaping industry excellence and providing seafarers with the skills they need to thrive.
This Maritime UK Week, we're highlighting how, through innovation, research and high-quality teaching, Warsash Maritime School impacts the global industry.
We're all about real-world, future-ready teaching, and that's where the latest technology comes into play. At Solent, we house one of the country's only Maritime Simulation Centres. This is where students experience the realities of life at sea, in safe and controlled environments led by industry experts.
At our ship handling centre, specialist training for pilots, masters and senior ships' officers is carried out at a facility that is the only one of its kind in the UK. This practice of simulated learning experiences and opportunities for continuous professional development ensures that even years after graduating and gaining a certificate of competency (CoC), mariners can continue to hone their skills and develop their expertise at Solent.
Protecting the world's oceans is as pressing as it's ever been, and institutions like our own are taking action to drive forward innovative approaches to marine sustainability. From finding environmentally friendly solutions to fuelling vessels and joining a £21.3m national research partnership aimed at decarbonising the sector, we're contributing to meaningful transformation in maritime.
Academics and researchers at Solent work collaboratively on research projects which tackle some of the sector's foremost challenges. From shaping best practice and policy, to improving gender equality and health and safety, every year new research comes out of the University which informs the sector both nationally and internationally.
Warsash Maritime School attracts prospective seafarers from all over the country, with approximately 35% of UK cadets receiving their training at our globally-recognised institution. We equip cadets with all the skills they need to thrive, and our graduates go on to work all around the world, establishing meaningful careers with employers who benefit from their high-quality training. With the right people and the right skills, the sector continues to flourish - and we're proud of our role in this.
