Retail professionals invited to get ahead with bespoke course

9 April 2025

A unique course designed especially for the retail and leisure sector, delivered by a team of industry experts at Southampton Solent University, is inviting applicants to apply for June 2025.

Created in collaboration with the Revo Educational Trust, Retail and Leisure Place Management responds to the evolving nature of the UK’s day and night economy, giving professionals the skills they need to thrive in these settings. A course graduate says:

“Just wrapped up two days of intense and insightful learning in Southampton and London. It was fascinating to see how centres meet unique consumer expectations and challenges in their own way.

“Visits to The Marlands and West Quay in Southampton, as well as Battersea Power Station in London, emphasised how management needs to adapt strategies based on the maturity and market of each centre.”

A Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education, the course invites current and aspiring retail and centre managers to gain new insights, hone their skills and acquire knowledge which will help them thrive in their careers. Revo Educational Trust trustee and Commercial Property Manager of The Marlands, Southampton, Tim Keeping says:

“The Revo Retail and Leisure Place Management course remains the primary benchmark for those seeking to progress their career in the industry. Having graduated from the course myself some 18 years ago, following a long career in department store management, it was the perfect introduction to shopping and leisure place management allowing me to quickly learn the key drivers and skills needed to succeed in driving client’s assets forwards.

“This partnership with Solent University has allowed the Revo Educational Trust to update the course material and modernise the teaching and learning experience for a new generation of retail and leisure place managers.”

Taught across 12 months, the course offers a delivery model that prioritises remote learning to give working professionals the flexibility they seek. During the course, students have the opportunity to create networks and learn from peers, while getting a behind the scenes look at some of the country’s most iconic retail destinations, including Battersea Power Station.

The course is managed by Solent’s Deputy Head of Business and Law – Research and Knowledge Exchange, Michelle Merry, who spent three decades in the tourism and aviation industries. Module Leader, Lesley Taylor also brings a wealth of experience which students will benefit from, including head office roles in major department stores.

On the benefit of this course for retail professionals, Lesley says:

“In a constantly evolving retail environment, the knowledge from the course and application to the learner's own role will give candidates a clear advantage in the competitive retail and leisure management jobs market. Additionally, getting to know other learners creates fresh networking opportunities across the UK.”
