Screen legend visits Solent

6 March 2025

On Friday 21 February, actor, writer and director of stage and screen, Mark Gatiss visited Southampton Solent University to share insight into his accomplished career with BA (Hons) Film and Television students.

Committed to connecting students to professionals in the film and TV industry, Solent was delighted to welcome Mark Gatiss, best known for his work in television across hits such as Sherlock and Doctor Who, alongside roles in film, including in Oscar-winning The Favourite and box office blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

Mark's visit to Solent University in February 2025, which marked his second time on campus, gave students the opportunity to ask him questions and hear how he has carved out such a successful career across a variety of roles - from writing and directing to acting and producing. Rashaan Hersi, an undergrad who had the chance to meet Mark, says:

"Having Mark Gatiss attend our university as a guest lecturer was an incredibly helpful opportunity and a dream come true, but getting a one-to-one session with him about my Final Major Project was beyond anything I could have imagined. His insight into storytelling, character, and atmosphere completely reshaped my approach and gave me a lot of new concepts to take into consideration. He didn't just give advice - he challenged me to think outside the box, push my ideas further, and embrace the unexpected. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stay with me forever."

After a special Q&A, Mark spent time in the classroom with Film and Television undergraduates, learning about their ambitions and creative ideas. He says:

"It's always nice to give something back and keep connected to young people who are just starting out. Their questions are always very interesting and perceptive.

"The value of higher education is that no matter how much technology changes, there are skills to be learned, and you can't just pluck those off YouTube. It's all about practice and training; there's a huge value in that. University is the place where you can have the cushion of trying things out."

The visit was hosted by Dr Mark Aldridge, an Associate Professor at Solent and a go-to historian on all things Agatha Christie. He says:

"It was wonderful to welcome Mark back to the University, and a particular pleasure to have him engaging with our Film and Television students about their projects. Mark offered invaluable advice and guidance, which our students really appreciated.

"This opportunity is just another example of how we ensure that our students are work-ready at the end of their studies."
