Solent ranked 4th for low carbon emissions

Solent has been ranked 4th university in the UK for low carbon emissions.

Solent has demonstrated a 63% reduction in total carbon energy output since 2015, with clear year-on-year improvements (also taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic) according to recent HESA data.

During this period, the University has built two new buildings – The Spark and the Solent Sports Complex – both designed using the latest technologies to minimise reliance upon carbon energy sources.

Centralising learning and teaching activity to the East Park Terrace campus, bringing leases to an end, the disposal of redundant buildings and ensuring our recent refurbishment projects have aligned with industry environmental standards, has further reduced our reliance on carbon energy sources. This work, alongside new energy management and reduction schemes, has further reduced our carbon footprint.

Bryan Carroll, Director of Estates and Facilities, is delighted that the actions taken over the past few years on our journey towards carbon net zero have been recognised, and that we are making excellent progress against our 2025 Strategy.

He says, “Looking forward, we will continue to explore ways to reduce carbon emissions, including investment in technology, improvements to thermal efficiency of our buildings, and further consolidation onto our East Park Terrace campus. A new Carbon Management Plan will be at the core of our strategy in working towards carbon net zero, supported by a revised Environmental and Sustainability Enabling Plan."
