Southampton Solent University has climbed the ranks in the latest People & Planet University League, topping the table when it comes to reducing carbon emissions.
People & Planet's league table ranks universities across a variety of areas, from waste and recycling to energy sources and education. The 2024/25 results see Solent jump 25 places, showcasing a year of development when it comes to environmental sustainability, sitting in the top half of universities for its overall performance.
The University also came joint first in the category of carbon reduction, showcasing its commitment to improving energy efficiency and reducing energy and water waste. Solent's Director of Estates and Facilities, Bryan Carroll, says:
"Climbing 25 places in the overall table and being ranked number one across all UK universities for carbon reduction is an excellent result for all the hard work and commitment of the teams to reduce Solent's environmental impact.
"With a new Carbon Management Plan due to be launched shortly, it demonstrates our commitment to environmental sustainability, and for Solent to be at the forefront of helping to fight climate change."
People & Planet is the biggest student network in the UK, campaigning for social and environmental justice. Empowering the next generation of change-makers, every year the network evaluates universities in the UK to rank their environmental and ethical performance. In 2020, Solent also proudly signed People & Planet's Fossil Free Declaration, after fully divesting from fossil fuels.
Having made the strategic decision to consolidate its teaching and learning to one main campus at the heart of Southampton, Solent is making changes to utilise its campus mindfully. From more energy-efficient fixtures and fittings and monitoring water usage, to reviewing campus opening hours at times of low occupancy, it's individual actions like these that contribute to the University's growing sustainability credentials.
As the second-highest ranked university in the region - and the highest ranked in the city of Southampton - Solent is making great gains in this area, having implemented initiatives which contribute to its continued reduction in energy demand and use.
