Southampton Solent University is set to host the first ever ‘Sport at Solent’ festival from Wednesday 30 April to Sunday 4 May.
Offering a fresh competitive challenge for its sports teams while fostering stronger local ties, the festival will see Solent’s student body competing against a host of teams from the local area, alongside other universities.
Among the external teams taking part are Millbrook FC, who play the University's football team, Weston Park Blades, who will match up with Solent’s netball squad, and the Southampton Aztecs, who will challenge one of two student futsal teams. These friendly but competitive fixtures aim to provide Solent athletes with the perfect test at the start of the summer term.
Solent’s Department of Sport and Health have helped to organise the Festival with the Students’ Union and are excited about the potential for building stronger connections within the local community. Head of Sports & Health at Solent University, Dominic Cunliffe, said:
“It’s great to see all the effort that has gone into organising this event, our sports clubs are some of our best ambassadors and we wanted to ensure they finish the academic year with a chance to celebrate.
“I’m very thankful to all of the clubs that have agreed to participate this year, going forward we hope to grow the festival and find as many fixtures for our teams as possible.”
The event is expected to attract a large crowd, with a good mix of sports on display across Test Park, Solent’s East Park Terrace sport complex and the Spark. Alongside traditional sports such as football, rugby and netball, there will also be the likes of e-sports, pickleball, powerlifting and darts – ensuring as many students as possible can get involved.
President of the Solent’s Students’ Union, Chinmay Darji, said:
"We're so excited to be celebrating our amazing Solent sports teams at the Sport at Solent Festival. Campus will be buzzing with sports, great music and community vibes.
“Whether you're cheering from the sidelines or just soaking up the atmosphere, it's the perfect way to come together, show your support, and make some great memories before the summer break."
With local teams bringing their competitive spirit, the festival is sure to be a high-energy week that will not only put the university’s teams to the test but also highlight Southampton Solent University’s commitment to community engagement and athletic excellence.
