About the course

Are you interested in a career in research? Or do you have questions about your professional practice? Through this MRes you’ll develop knowledge and skills in research methods, plan and lead your own research project, and have an opportunity to further develop your research career for a range of different sectors.

This Master’s by Research is a research degree, which means that you will develop skills by carrying out an independent research project, rather than being taught research methods. Instead, you will develop research skills along with specialist subject knowledge as you complete your project. This combination will allow you to answer some of society’s most pressing questions. This course will provide you with a solid grounding in research methods and experience of planning and managing unique projects, with real world answers.

On this course, you won’t produce a dissertation. Instead, you will complete a series of real-world tasks, such as preparing funding applications, presenting research, and writing journal articles. This creates a portfolio of work for you to take forward. You might even get a chance to publish your work.

Through one-to-one supervision and engagement with Solent’s Researcher Development Programme, you’ll gain the necessary skills to conduct independent research in the future. As such, the MRes also provides a good foundation for anyone interested in pursuing PhD study.

And you can choose to study full-time for one year, or part-time for two years. The skills acquired on this course are an asset for a range of sectors where research and evidence generation are critical.
