The club was created after discussions with a group of former patients from the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Unit, Solent University, New Forest District Council, the Rugby Football Union and Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR).
After successful taster sessions, Team Solent embraced the new wheelchair rugby club offering it a new home at Sports Centre St Mary's.
The Club's mission is to engage with and offer sporting opportunities to the disabled community across the south coast. The team welcomes players from a wide range of sporting backgrounds, including elite athletes and beginners.
The first team plays in GBWR Super Series Division 1 and benefits from access to Solent University’s Sports Science facilities and expertise, including support with their physiological, psychological and biomechanical development to enhance their performance.
The second team focuses on recreational sport involving players of all ages, from children through to adults. The team promotes the health and psychological benefits of sport through mass participation, while still offering competition experience. This squad also helps players increase their skills to eventually play for the elite team. The team plays in Division 3, so it can continue to offer competition to youth players.
