Biography

Gavin Comber is a lecturer in football coaching on the BSc Football Studies course. He has worked in football coaching for 15 years in both the men’s and women’s games and in youth and adult football. He has the FA Advanced Youth Award and the UEFA B licence.

Gavin has worked in higher education for eight years and holds a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. He studied the Relative Age Effect at a Premier League academy as part of a MSc at Brunel University, and his findings were published in the 2020 Special Edition of Journal of Sports Sciences. He also collaborated with West Bromwich Albion’s academy to study the training and match load of academy players for a Performance Analysis MRes with University of Derby.

Gavin is passionate about how coaches can provide the best learning environment for young players and how coaches can design practice activities to best support their players.

Further information

Gavin began his teaching career at London Metropolitan University in 2014, having recently completed a MSc at Brunel University. In 2017 he joined Solent University on the Football Studies course in a part-time position while also coaching football at Watford FC Academy. In 2022 he became a full-time lecturer at Solent.

He has contributed to the teaching on many modules on the football coaching side of the course including the Elite Youth Development, and Football Management modules, and Coaching in the foundation phase.
