MSc, PhD, FHEA, MRSB

Lecturer

Department of Science and Engineering

Headshot of Ibemusu Otele

Biography

Ibemusu earned her biomedical technology degree from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in 2012. She completed her master's in biomedical engineering with Distinction at the University of Bedfordshire, UK, in 2017, thanks to sponsorship from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). In 2018, Ibemusu began her career as an assistant lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria, which helped refine her teaching and research skills for future academic and professional endeavours.

Ibemusu completed her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Nanomedicine at De Montfort University (DMU) in 2024, supported by a scholarship from NDDC. Her research focused on cancer and molecular biology, drug toxicology, and delivery systems. She investigated the effect of nanoparticle-loaded anticancer drugs in 2D and 3D cancer cell models, developing advanced 3D spheroid and genomic analysis to enhance the understanding and treatment of complex diseases such as cancer.

During my PhD, Ibemusu served as a part-time lecturer and technical demonstrator at DMU, and a biology teacher at DMU International College, delivering foundational knowledge to pre-university students and refining their pedagogical skills.

After completing her PhD, Ibemusu took the opportunity to further her research career as a research assistant at DMU. In this role, she actively contributed to a significant project funded by the esteemed United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society (UKEMS). She also served as a co-applicant on the grant, enhancing her collaborative skills and expanding her research network.

In 2025, Ibemusu joined Southampton Solent University as a lecturer in biomedical science. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a member of several organisations, including the Royal Society of Biology (RSB), the British Toxicology Society (BTS), and UKEMS. Her journey showcases her commitment to academic excellence and nurturing future scientists.

Further information

Ibemusu has extensive teaching and mentoring experience, including roles as an assistant and part-time lecturer, technical demonstrator, and biology teacher. She has supervised BSc and MSc projects, mentored PhD students, and assessed coursework for undergraduate biomedical sciences students, providing fair evaluations and constructive feedback.

In her teaching roles, Ibemusu delivered lectures and practical sessions in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, and general biology. As a class adviser, she offered pastoral support to help students with academic and personal challenges.

As a technical demonstrator, Ibemusu guided biomedical and medical science students in laboratory sessions. She provided hands-on guidance in the use of advanced laboratory techniques and equipment, including HPLC, UV/Vis Spectrophotometry, Gas Chromatography (GC), Flame Photometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, FTIR, Cell Culture, MTT Assays, and ELISA, while ensuring safety and precision in the lab.
