Biography

Luis is originally from Portugal where he studied to become a general nurse. His enthusiasm for further education and advanced practice made him move to the UK where he has lived for nine years.

Luis has completed a PG Diploma in Advanced Practice at the University of Southampton and he is also Independent Nurse Prescriber registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. His background is neurosciences, and he has extensive experience in stroke medicine, neurosurgery, and neurology. He is competent in history taking and physical assessment and his previous job as an advanced nurse practitioner at the Wessex Neurological Centre in the University Hospital Southampton allowed him to developed competencies such as requesting diagnostic imaging which mainly included CT brain, CT angiogram, MR brain and chest X-Ray, performing CSF sampling from external ventricular catheter (EVD), EVD removal and sutures, intracranial pressure bolt removal, arterial blood gas sampling and administration of intrathecal antibiotics via EVD. Luis has also undertaken outpatient neurology clinics as an independent practitioner performing CSF sampling via lumbar puncture and by administering botulinum toxin to service users with hemifacial spasm and cervical dystonia.

Luis also has an interest in cosmetic medicine and currently works part-time in a CQC regulated clinic as an aesthetic nurse practitioner where he undertakes comprehensive cosmetic consultations, prescribes, and administers botulinum toxin, and other cosmetic treatments.

Luis has taken on a new challenge at Solent University and is the proud lead for the Independent and Supplementary Nurse Prescribing course which is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
