Biography

During the late 1980s, Maarten trained as a deck officer in the Dutch Merchant Navy.

He emigrated from the Netherlands to the UK and started a career in the applied science of oceanography. He studied for his BSc (Hons) Ocean Science and Fisheries Science (2.1) at the University of Plymouth, followed by an MSc Oceanography from the University of Southampton, and PhD research into wave dynamics in a macro-tidal estuary from the University of Cambridge. He then spent nine years in various roles employed as a numerical modeller in the marine commercial sector.

Maarten became a Chartered Marine Scientist from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) in 2005. In 2008 Maarten took the opportunity to train as a teacher of mathematics. In 2009 he qualified (QTS) with a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Southampton. He then gained experience working in several roles (up to course leader for A level maths provision) at secondary schools, sixth form and FE colleges on the Isle of Wight. In 2014-15, he completed a L5 leadership and management course, followed by a course on team leading.

In January 2019, Maarten started his present position as a lecturer in marine engineering in Solent's Warsash Maritime School.

To help fund his PhD research, Maarten worked as a sediment analysis laboratory assistant at the Cambridge Coastal Research Unit of the University of Cambridge. Following successful completion of his PhD, he worked as a coastal processes engineering assistant within the Flood Defence Department of the Environment Agency in Peterborough.

In 2001 he was employed as an oceanographer/scientific programmer at Fugro GEOS (Global Environmental and Ocean Sciences) in Swindon. Relocation of the company in 2003 let Maarten to move to the Isle of Wight from where he commuted to his work as a consultant coastal modeller at ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd in Southampton.

He then worked for a short spell for a small Island-based company, PhysE Ltd (Physical Environment) as a metocean adviser, before training as a maths teacher in 2008.
