Biography

Martin is a lecturer in performance analysis at Solent University. He graduated from Robert Gordon University with a degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Science before going on to gain an MSc in Applied Sports Performance Analysis.

During his master’s degree, Martin went on placement with the Scottish FA to work as a performance analyst, supporting the youth teams. In 2018, Martin started his PhD, collaborating with the Scottish FA and the Data Lab where he investigated use potential of data for measuring the collective behaviour of football teams.

Completing his PhD in 2022, Martin moved to Southampton to teach at Solent University where he has remained since. During this time, he has been actively publishing research, as well as becoming a Fellow of Advanced Higher Education, and gaining his Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

While completing his PhD, Martin worked with the Scottish FA as a performance analyst, supporting their youth teams. He held a range of roles and responsibilities, including creating opposition analysis reports, delivering personalised video feedback for individuals, recording and tagging matches, gathering and feeding back GPS data, and conducting statistical analysis on team data.
