Richard St John Jacobs

Lecturer

Warsash Maritime School

Headshot of Richard St John Jacobs

Biography

From a young age, Richard knew he wanted to teach. However, at the time he hadn’t yet discovered his love for boat handling and the maritime sector.

After working for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, his eyes were opened to the need for good teaching standards for our seafarers. He has now spent 14 years working within this industry and has been delivering professional training for nine of those years.

More recently, his passion for course development and management has flourished and helped to lead to his appointment of lecturer in maritime and offshore safety in March 2023.

Further information

Richard began his career in maritime with the Maritime & Coastguard Agency in 2009.

In 2011 he moved to the commercial sector, selling courses for the yachting, water sports, snow sports, and maritime security industries. After completing a fixed term contract, he was moved to the operations department to develop courses and deliver training across a range of sectors, focusing mainly on boat handling and superyacht training.

After relocating in 2014, Richard worked as a freelance skipper/instructor before joining a multinational manufacturer of marine navigation and entertainment systems, where he worked as a field service engineer.

Before joining Warsash Maritime School, he returned to a previous employer as operations manager/chief instructor to run the training department and business operation.

During his career, Richard has worked on a range of craft including powerboats, sailing and motor vessels, and workboats for the commercial and renewables sector.
