Captain Sriram Rajagopal is an ex-Master Mariner and an award-winning maritime lecturer with more than 30 years’ experience in the maritime industry worldwide. He sailed for 17 years on a variety of dry and wet cargo ships with Barber Ship management (Oslo and Kuala Lumpur). He then worked as a senior QHSE and training superintendent, deputy training manager and shipyard HSE supervisor for Anglo Eastern Ship Management (Hong Kong).
Sriram has taught seafarers and shore based personnel of different ages and backgrounds for nearly two decades. As an intern at IMO and as editor for GlobalMET, he attended numerous IMO meetings, assisted in the writing of IMO Model Courses, has presented papers at various conferences, and conducted research for the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, UK.
He is the co-author of a number of maritime books and articles. His work has been featured in the Nautical Institute's magazine Seaways, in the Elsevier journal Marine Policy, and in the Nautical Institute's recent book on Bulk Carrier Operations. He is part of the Warsash Maritime Technology and Innovation Research Group and was the principal investigator for the RIKE funded FISID project.
He currently teaches MSc, BSc, OOW and deck cadet training courses at Solent's Warsash Maritime School.
Sriram began his seafaring career in 1990 and sailed worldwide for 17 years on different types of ships (tankers, container ships, general cargo, bulk carriers, forest product carriers, ro-ro ships, and car carriers) as 3rd, 2nd, Chief Officer and Master in Barber Ship Management (Norway). He received his command on the 6,400 cars capacity PCTC Heroic Ace in 2006.
He then worked ashore for 16 years in various roles and locations worldwide with Anglo Eastern Ship Management, one of the largest ship managers in the world. His roles included nautical lecturer, shipboard trainer, senior QHSE and training superintendent, shipyard HSE supervisor, deputy training manager, internal ISM ISPS auditor, and marine accident investigator.
During his career, he worked in Hong Kong, Singapore, India, China, Latvia, the Philippines, UK, USA, and Australia. His students have included maritime professionals of different ranks and nationalities - from cadets to masters, trainee engineers to chief engineers, crew and ratings, to ship superintendents, office managers to shipyard personnel, as well as shore-based personnel.
