Senior Lecturer

Department of Science and Engineering

Vittorio Boccolini, Senior Lecturer

Biography

Following his passion for sailing, Vittorio studied a master’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II.

Just five days after completing his studies, he began working for a company which managed the tug concession in three ports. He worked on the operational control of the fleet and was actively involved in the service and maintenance of the tugs.

Later, Vittorio worked as a designer and was part of the team developing a surface drive transmission which was used by OSG to win the Powerboat P1 Evolution Championship in 2006.

After leaving the designer job, he studied for his PhD in naval architecture and marine engineering, which he successfully completed. After completing his PhD, Vittorio joined as a partner in a rigging company dedicated to refitting masts and race optimisation, then immediately later another company specialising in the design of small commercial vessels built in steel and aluminum. He also worked as a surveyor for a classification society for recreational crafts and as an independent technical adviser for the Court of Napoli.

When he arrived in the UK, Vittorio worked at Fareham College building the marine engineering department, and then joining the HE department.

Vittorio joined Solent University in 2018 as a yacht engineering lecturer.

In his free time, Vittorio loves cooking, travelling, spending time with my family and, of course, sailing his Laser dinghy.

Further information

During his time in industry, Vittorio has designed vessels up to 30m in steel and aluminium, and designed composite components and weight optimisation. He has also been involved with mechanical design, FEA analysis and 3D modelling.
