Richard Smith

Role at Solent

Richard is the former CEO of Unite Group plc and an experienced business leader.

His expertise is built on 13 years at Unite Group plc (Unite Students) including eight years as Group CEO. Unite Students is the UK’s leading manager and developer of student accommodation. Prior to Unite Students, Richard worked in the transport industry in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia, including 13 years at National Express Group PLC. He is also a former Non-Executive Director for Industrials REIT.

Richard is an adviser Unite to the higher education sector, and also to listed and private businesses focusing on operational and real estate organisations. In addition he is particularly interested in supporting the mental health and success of young people.

Richard is a member of the University’s Governance Committee and of the Remuneration Committee.
