Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse can take many forms, including controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence. It can also include economic and online abuse. In most cases, domestic abuse is perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner but can also be perpetrated by a family member or carer. One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic violence or abuse at some point in their lifetime.

Domestic abuse is a pattern of behaviour that is used by someone to control or obtain power over their partner or family member. It can happen at any point in a relationship, including after a relationship ends.

Domestic abuse is never the fault of the person who is experiencing it, and it can happen to anyone of any age, background, gender, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity.
