Music's such a wonderful career to get into, it's truly a worldwide industry, so from teaching, cruise ship, work theatre work, performing live on stage, song writing, writing music for film, there's wonderful opportunities all around the world to perform, write and record music. What sets us apart is the students and the staff all come from a wide range of genre preferences and backgrounds, that's very unique, all the instructors here are very passionate about what they do and that certainly comes out in our students work too.

The best thing about the course is probably like, it's just so practical and relevant to today, like we do like industry and then like go into studios and stuff and it's like, something I can apply, like when I'm working on music outside of uni.

The facilities here at Solent University are truly world class -from a range of music studios, small, medium and large, through recording your band in a large music studio, through to recording and over dubbing some vocals in a small vocal booth, through to practice rooms which are all fully kitted out with industry standard amplification and drum kits.

The facilities, we've got studios and practice rooms which are brilliant and you can use that really late at night.

What's really valuable about this course is that all modules are set up to provide industry skills required to be ready to work in the music industry. Of course, we like our students to be very well informed about the range of opportunities available within the music industry but we also teach transferable skills such as time management, project management, collaboration, working with others and also collaborating with other people on campus. If you need artwork for your album, you can speak to the art students, if you need fashion advice, you can speak to the fashion students and that cross-collaboration is one thing that's really unique about this university.

So the most important skill I've learned at uni is probably discipline, balancing deadlines and then performances and just making sure I'm on top of everything and time management.

The campus here, is set right in the middle of a very vibrant city for music and along with its sports and recreation and nightclubs, we are surrounded by a wide range of world-renowned venues such as the O2, The Joiners, 1865, the Engine Rooms, Heartbreakers, we are right in the middle of an epicentre of music creation and indeed our assessed gigs are actually booked within those venues, so rather than just performing on campus to your fellow students, we actually put all gigs right from year one, in one of these world-class venues that are open to the public, your family friends and the general public can come along and watch you stage and refine your craft during your three-year degree program here.

The lecturers on the course are lovely, they're actually interested, I feel like if I show them music they always like, respond and give criticism but like, care - it's not like, it's just uni, they actually want to see you succeed which is nice.

Students get a wide range of opportunities while they're studying here, I mentioned before about students being asked to perform in actual, real venues that are open to the public but we also have a range of master classes where we invite practitioners in from the industry, speaking about matters such as song writing, about music business, we even have lecturers come in and speak about health and looking after yourself as a performing musician.

There's loads of extracurricular activities like anthems gigs and Christmas gigs and open mics, so just all things you can get involved in and like, just gain experience. Like, my confidence has grown so much from first year, it's crazy.

Wherever possible, the university actually encourages the students to work on campus as well, so from one-off gigs for an event, through to working and manning the evening practice studios. The university really tries to look after the students whilst they're here and offers them jobs whilst they're studying on their degree course. Alongside studying music, students often need other support and Solent University is really set up to help and support students, no matter what the problem may be. The university has a hub, a student hub where you can go and speak to a person face to face about any sort of problem that you might be having, through to needing mental health support, through to accommodation, no matter what the problem - university is really keyed up to help you get the most out of your degree.
