Upbeat music plays as a selection of Graphic design student work is shown on screen. The first piece of work shows a beige square over a white background with an illustration of the top of a pink cartoon character's head, wearing brown glasses, at the bottom of the screen. Above the character in browny, yellow font it says 'Meet Po.' The second image is a grey slate which has two raised shapes, one a triangle, the other a trapezium. The third image is a white background with black, capitalised, bold font in different textures which says 'HERE TO CREATE CHANGE'.

The best things about lecturers on my course is when you start the project and they like induce what you'll be doing what work you'll be doing on the project. They explain out of the clear where you can get it and understand it so you know what you need to do what facilities you can work with what equipment you need. What you're planning for next step.

We have great facilities here, we have our own and within the art block, we have our own base room which has open desk space for students to come and work in and outside of talk sessions. This is linked to the print room so if you want to take your work into letterpress or screen printing the facilities are there to use, as well as technical staff to help you with that process as well. As well as those print, photographic, digital and on the analogue printing studios, so if you want to get your work blown up to a kind of a massive scale, we've got the facilities there for you to use that as well as 3D workshop, so if you're thinking of making 3D letter forms we've got laser cutter, woodworking, metal work so again we can you know help you make your ideas a reality.

The facilities of the course is very helpful if we will create a piece of artwork so you use graphics like Adobe like when you do letter pressing or print screening so you want to make a graphic poster you've got the facilities there to make that or your idea come to life.

One of the great things about the university is that we have Solent Creatives which is an in-house creative agency where external companies can put forward a job that they want students to pitch for. Students have to sign up for it and I always encourage them to do from the second year onwards and then if there's a job that comes up that they're interested in, they can pitch their ideas and then if it's successful they get paid the the arranged fee and then they're helped along with dealing with the client, invoicing, making sure that they've got their money through in time. So it's a good taster of how working freelance works but within that safety net of Solent and also giving you live jobs for your portfolio for when you graduate. Also we get approached with a lot of competitions from companies, we've got a couple running at the moment as well, plus other design jobs that might come directly for us that they're looking for students to help with of a logo redesign or t-shirt design, smaller design jobs but coming to students and again good opportunity for the students to get live briefs within their portfolio. So we like to encourage students to put their work forward for live briefs, open competitions because it's a good way of getting your work out there into the into the industry. And on level six one of the modules is the D and AD, New Blood design awards. So this is a selection of live briefs from a range of companies in industry where the students have to react to and come up with a very tight set brief. We've been successful with that over the years and picked up a number of awards, pencil awards, along the way, it's good opportunity for the students to just get their work out there under the nose of industry experts.

It's getting to try and do stuff out of my comfort zone I never thought of trying before like, I never thought trying 3D graphics in the streets before. I was always a 2D flat artist, but I never thought I'd go to 3D graphics before, so it was trying to do new exciting stuff.

So here at Solent the Graphic Design and Illustration course share a few modules within level four and level six. I think this is a great opportunity because the two pathways work very closely in industry and you know, there's a lot of graphic designers that are perhaps more illustrative led and you know and vice versa and you know, it it's good to get to know and work with illustrators because you'll probably be working with those in your future careers and also for illustration good for them to be working with graphic designers in a collaborative spirit.
