The performing arts and entertainment industry is one of the largest employers in the country and makes a huge contribution to the UK economy. There are many career opportunities from performing music at festivals, concerts, cruise ships and theatre, through to sound engineering, mixing, mastering, production, songwriting and music for film.
Many graduates also choose to teach music. Although the industry is competitive, it is truly international, so there's plenty of scope to travel and work with a wide range of people.

I think the best thing about my course is the fact that we can have like, actual industry experience and the massive range of facilities that we have here as well, we get so much hands-on stuff it's just brilliant.

The lecturers they're so invested in everyone and everything that you do, they make the effort to sort of, learn about every single person and they put on all these workshops for you to learn extra stuff and they find opportunities that specifically, for certain people and at the end of the day, the best thing about this is the experience that I've got and how I can apply that out in the world.

Popular music can initially appear relatively straightforward. At Solent, we drill down to the finer detail to give students clear insight into how popular music works in all its forms. The knowledge gained through this process provides skills that will set Solent students apart from many other musicians and producers.
Students will also be able to take advantage of the weekly small group instrumental or vocal lessons delivered by visiting professionals.
Students also gain a wide range of skills essential for any graduate career such as research, critical thinking and reflective practice.

I don't feel worried that I'm not going to have the experience, there's so much stuff that we've done that I feel like, has just put me ahead of other people and I'm not scared to jump right in there.

The campus is set right in the middle of a vibrant and modern city along with a great mix of sports, recreation and nightclubs, the city has a large number of world-renowned music venues. As a part of the course we arrange assessed gigs in professional venues. These gigs are open to the public, giving students a real taste of the working world.
Facilities include professional quality recording studios, music labs, practice rooms and performance spaces, which are fully equipped with industry standard vintage and modern equipment, including the latest hardware and software.
These resources are free to use for music students until 10 pm every weekday.

The room that we're in now 'Studio 1', is basically a replica of what you'd get in the industry, a proper studio, where you can record absolutely anything.
I've recorded violins in there, drums, vocals, bass guitars, anything under the sun it's absolutely brilliant.
So we have access to the media hatch and personally I've taken out cameras which i could never afford and different lenses, lights, microphones and I've been able to create videos for assignments and for personal use and I would never have been able to do that if I didn't have that facility there.

Wherever possible, the university tries to hire students for work on campus. The music students that could include one-off events such as performing at a university gig, but also regular work, such as supervising the evening practice rooms.
There is lots of support at the wider university such as the student hub, library, IT and learning support. We also have an annual competition. The winning producers and performers, spend a day recording an original song in the world famous Abbey Road Studios.

The most important thing that I've learned from my degree is how to network and yeah, it's massively important you have to speak to people, you basically have to grab any opportunities as you can, so that you can get that experience because it is so important, it's what employers are looking for at the end of the day and it's the catch 22 is that a lot of the time you need experience to get experience, so whilst you're here if you can you just have to grab everything with both hands.
