This module will introduce you to the function, principles, and techniques of financial management. In particular, it will focus on the relationship between companies seeking to raise finance, and the investors who provide that finance.

This module is concerned with the analysis of financial institutions and markets in the UK, which are crucially important for the operation of a successful modern economy.
Taxation Principles BFA522
You will develop a curiosity to understand and critique the impact of this evolving taxation environment. The knowledge gained can be used for a career in practice, industry, or for your own personal tax affairs.

Acting and Performance – Live Brief CUP550​
You will create a theatre performance, to be performed live, which connects with a ‘real world’ audience. Recent examples have seen our students engaged in an ambitious local project working with asylum-seekers, engaging with street theatre, and creating shows for sixth-form college audiences.
Performance and Identity CUP549​
Race, gender, and disability are key concerns in modern society. Using a mixture of theory and practice this module will explore ways in which theatre and performance use these issues and others to inspire new theatre work and impact society.

Access All Areas: Documenting Society (FDA526)
Documentaries provide factual representations that raise questions about the world we live in. On this module, you will consider how documentary makes the personal political, exploring the everyday impact of broader social issues in telling stories about individuals and communities. As a genre, the documentary spans film and television: cinematic feature-length films we experience in the multiplex; longform and serialised examples found on streaming services; reality and fly-on-the-wall programmes broadcast on television or online. You will consider different film and television approaches to filming non-fiction in order to demonstrate an awareness of how theory can develop into practice. Behaviour and the Brain PSY526
You will gain an overview of brain anatomy and how processes are localised to different areas or structures. You’ll also learn about the way that our nervous system is structured to help us interact with the outside world or respond to internal sensations such as pain. We look at different cognitive functions such as memory, attention and thinking, using case studies to explain what happens when the brain is not functioning correctly, and consider a variety of research methods, from brain imaging to problem solving and exploring how drugs affect behaviour.

Core modules
Planning Live Projects
Events and projects within the sport and wider leisure sector are diverse. While the aims and objectives differ, the basic premise behind successful event/project planning, organisation, implementation, and evaluation will be common. Concepts of group formation, team leadership and management, feasibility analysis (SMART objectives), marketing, budgeting, financial management, risk assessment, scheduling, GANNT chart planning are explored and analysed alongside operational aspects of managing projects and working with teams and external stakeholders responding to conflict and change management through the key focus of this group project.
Human Resources and Performance Management
You will develop knowledge of a range of core operational management principles and their applications within service-related industries. You will explore the soft elements of management which include organisational culture, and how this is influenced by different management and leadership styles and approaches, dependent on the behaviours, values, beliefs and personalities of individuals. You will go on to look at the hard elements of human resources (HR) management which includes some aspects of employment law and associated procedures, related to recruitment and selection, training and development and performance management.

Adventure and Outdoor Recreation
In this module you will explore and understand factors affecting UK demand for outdoor and adventure recreation in this country and overseas. Firstly you will examine the demographic (lifestyle) of the recreational consumer, building on exploration of target groups from Level 4 and external and internal factors that affect participation. The second part of this module will explore and understand the provision of outdoor recreation and adventure tourism in this country and overseas and how this provision is developed to meet and exceed the needs of the UK recreational consumer through public, private and voluntary organisations.
Sociological Perspectives
In addition to learning the theories that underpin the subject of sociology of sport, you will engage with various topics and learning styles and opportunities. This will ensure you are given different ways to learn and gain confidence in doing so. You will gain valuable knowledge and find ways of applying this in your own specific subject area in the future. You will also be able to challenge yourself to learn in different ways and to gain a better and deeper understanding of different topics.
The Politics, Culture and Sociology of Football
This module will provide you with a critical understanding of the world’s most popular but also most contested sport. Drawing upon a number of political and sociological literatures, we will critically explore various football-related issues from a range of different theoretical viewpoints. Each theoretical perspective will be analysed using a range of specific football-related literature. Using this literature, you will be expected to present a political and sociological analysis addressing the culture of football, and the importance of applying these theories to underpin such an analysis.

This module will teach you how to make the very best of pictures and audio as storytelling devices.
Sports Feature Writing JOU501
On this module you will learn how to create and craft engaging and creative features; how to conjure up feature ideas and learn the theory in targeting the right audiences, platforms and publications, and tailoring your writing style to suit.
Sport, Globalisation and Mega Events JOU502
This module considers the complex interplay of relationships between sport, culture and national identities and will be considered from International, European and global perspectives within the context of the role played by sporting mega-events as media spectacles.
Non-credit bearing modules - Newsday JOU500 and Voice Training JOU503
You will have exposure (as part of the module) to industry replicating Newsday activities. These are six-hour industry-standard events which encourage students to pitch and produce journalistic content to deadlines. They are great ways to perfect and adapt industry practices. Students will also get up to two hours of one to one voice training from a specialised voice coach to help them develop their presentation style.
These modules run all year long. They are not available to students coming for one semester only.
Applied Marine Systems SEF536
To refine the marine system integration process, you will gain an overview of regulations applicable to marine engineering systems. You will also acquire an appreciation of marine mechanical systems and finally, you will gain an introduction to the issue of ‘Green Design’ and environmental considerations.

Due to the plethora of design software used in the marine industry, this module will ensure that you develop the ability to transfer design information effectively between different software packages.
Sailing Yacht Design SEF533
The focus of this module is on the practical design of sailing boats, and this module gives you a unique opportunity to gain experience of sailing yacht designs for craft up to 24 metres in length, as well as working on a range of sailing yacht design case studies.
Motor Boat Design SEF535
The aim of the module is to develop the student’s technical design skills alongside the CAD design skills as required in a design office for motorboat design. The module also provides students with authentic ‘real world’ experience close to the typical design office practice associated with motor vessel design practice.
Resistance and Propulsion SEF532
This module continues to build on the principles covered in the first year, this time concentrating on the prediction of hydrodynamic resistance and powering requirements of small craft hulls.
Marine Production Technology SEF534
This module addresses the detailed aspects of how you manufacture cored Fibre Reinforced Composite (FRC) structures specific for marine production. This involves a theoretical knowledge which is backed up with practical experience of how to manufacture a comprehensive range of sample panels in controlled environments.

This module will introduce you to 3D and 2D photorealism skills that are common throughout CGI as well as being specific to the Architectural Visualisation industry. As well as precise modelling, physically based lighting and materials and up-to-date rendering practices, you will be encouraged to develop still images artistically using 2D post-production techniques.
VFX/Simulation FDA500
It might be a stereotype, but all Hollywood VFX blockbusters seem to have things exploding, buildings collapsing, tidal waves, smoke, fire and various other forms of disaster. You can make these things happen too (inside a computer only!). While the computer can help you create these effects, the artistic considerations such as drama, narrative and impact are key and the way you control the simulation involves a very different skill set.

Advanced Drawing FDA502
There is no better way to explore your creativity than through traditional drawing and this will free you to create concepts and ideas for your digital work in other units and to develop your own artistic style. Using traditional drawing methods you will explore areas such as the human figure, movement and composition while continuing to develop practical skills, observation and recall.

You will be introduced to scripting as a tool to extend the capability of the software you use for CGI and VFX and apply it in different areas of the pipeline.
Crimes of the Powerful EDU505
Whilst most government and popular crime narratives focus on the crimes of marginalised people, criminologists recognise that it is the crimes of powerful groups that often cause most harm. Focusing on criminal activities perpetrated by corporations, elites, and state bodies, this module encourages you to be a better-informed critic and analyst of crime by examining the offences of those who hold significant social, economic, and political power.

The desire to understand audiences has been at the heart of the film and television industries for decades. The diverse stages of production, for example, are frequently informed by anticipating audience responses: What reaction is hoped for or dreaded? Will a film or television programme evoke admiration, passion, fascination, irritation, disgust, or some other powerful human emotion? Instead of second-guessing what audiences want, the producers of film and television have long embraced a variety of techniques – from questionnaires to focus groups - in the hope of gaining deeper insights about their respective audiences. On this module, you will be introduced to a range of methods used to better understand how audiences react to, interpret, and makes sense of, film and television.

You will have exposure (as part of the module) to industry replicating Newsday activities. These are six-hour industry standard events which encourage students to pitch and produce journalistic content to deadlines. They are great ways to perfect and adapt industry practices. Students will also get up to two hours of one-to-one voice training from a specialised voice coach to help them develop their presentation style.
