27 October 2022

Upon completion of their studies, students from BA (Hons) Interior Design Decoration have the fantastic opportunity to attend the New Designer exhibition, providing the perfect opportunity to showcase their work to industry professionals, build up contacts and launch their careers.

In their final year of study, students from BA (Hons) Interior Design Decoration have the fantastic opportunity to attend the New Designers exhibition, providing the perfect opportunity to showcase their work to industry professionals, build up contacts and launch their careers.

We caught up with 2022 graduate, Jasmine Baldock, who shares her experiences of the exhibition, and how it led to her securing her first professional role.

Hi Jasmine, tell us about the project you had on display at New Designers

I displayed a 9ft tall banner that showed my final major project, a bar/restaurant called Freaky Deaky, inspired by the disco era.

How did you find the experience of presenting your work?

The experience was amazing, I met so many great people and companies including TRO, Lego and Merlin Entertainment all of whom I received job offers from in 3D and concept design. Very shortly after New Designers I accepted my current job at TRO as a 3D designer. I chose TRO for a great number of reasons (mainly because of the fabulous Pete - our Head of Studio- and Kirsty - our Head of Talent - who I met at New Designers) but mainly due to the fact I could continue to utilise and practice all of my skills in design, CAD, adobe software and more across a huge range of unusual projects.

Tell us more about your role with TRO:

We design everything from pop-up shops, bars, festivals and exhibitions across a huge portfolio of clients including Goodwood Festival, Adidas, Just Eat and Ribena, to name only a few. After nearly two months of working at TRO I have already widened my portfolio across roughly ten different clients and projects; all with massively diverse requirements of concept, 2D and 3D design. I work within a fantastic team of other experiential designers, 3D designers, graphic designers and more to deliver massive projects often within a quick turnaround.

How did Solent prepare you for your current role?

Solent helped prepare me with great CAD skills and an understanding of all CAD software in general that I have been able to apply when learning new software required by my new job. Regular critiques of my work also allowed me to build on my communication, confidence and presentation skills in order to not only secure me a job but also allow me to confidently present my concepts, ideas and designs now at work to clients and other professionals in my industry.

Lydia Southwell, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Interior Design Decoration said “The opportunity to exhibit at ND is a fantastic first steps for our student graduates to connect with industry and showcase their work outside university. The event is a great way for them to make vital connections which can act as a springboard to the world of work. Every year our students surpass our expectations and their own, with the feedback their work receives.”
