Postgraduate alumni present research papers at international AI healthcare conference

13 February 2024

Following on from their master's thesis, two postgraduate alumni were encouraged to submit abstracts to an international conference on AI for healthcare. With their final papers being accepted, they made their research presentation debut at ICAIH 2024.

Two postgraduate alumni from Solent’s popular MSc Applied AI and Data Science conversion course were invited to present their research at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare in January.

Both originally come from a non-technology background, Sasha Westlake studied BA (Hons) Hair and Make-up Design and Emmanuel Ughoo had been working in finance for seven years prior. They both wanted to change career direction and pursue an interest in data, and have now successfully transitioned into the dynamic field of AI and data science.

This was the first industry conference that which both Sasha and Emmanuel presented research. Sasha said, “This is the first conference I've applied for, so I was thrilled when I was accepted to present as a speaker.” Although initially daunting, the experience has given them the confidence to believe in their research and provided valuable networking opportunities.

After completing their master's thesis, they were encouraged to submit abstracts for the conference. Their work and concepts were identified as being of significant quality and originality to be shared with the academic community. Sasha’s paper, 'AI-Driven Form Analysis: Personalised Strength-Training Feedback via Computer Vision Techniques,' with the hope of developing current AI-supported fitness applications to help prevent exercise-related injuries. Emmanuel presented his paper on 'Intensive Care Unit Admission Prediction for Cardiovascular Patients using Artificial Intelligence' which bridges theory and practice, showcasing machine learning's tangible impact on reshaping cardiovascular healthcare on a broader scale.

Sasha expressed her gratitude for the support she received in preparing for the conference, stating, “Both my lecturers helped draft and structure my abstract to make sure it was suitable for submission. We also had online meetings to make sure I was prepared and ready for the type of challenges I may face. They have been a massive support during this process, and I know I would not have felt as confident presenting if it wasn't for their guidance and knowledge.”

Solent's MSc Applied AI and Data Science course is designed to address current issues and prepare students to work in this exciting industry. Emmanuel highlighted five ways in which the course helped him prepare for this opportunity: a robust curriculum covering a wide range of topics to undertake advanced research projects; practical application through real-world projects; research guidance from lecturers’ expertise; development of presentation skills building the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly; and networking opportunities with professionals and researchers in the field.

Following the conference Sasha intends to “continue my growth within AI, partaking in personal projects and courses to increase my abilities so I can make valuable contributions and innovations in the work I'm doing.” Emmanuel also wants to use this experience to pursue work in AI healthcare, telling us, ”My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between technological innovation and healthcare needs, ensuring that AI solutions are not only cutting-edge but also directly contribute to improving patient outcomes. I am excited about the prospect of contributing to advancements that have a real-world impact, and I am committed to a career path that integrates my expertise in AI and data science with a deep-seated dedication to enhancing healthcare outcomes through technological innovation.”

Dr Shakeel Ahmad, Course Leader on MSc Applied AI and Data Science said, “We are very proud of both Sasha and Emmanuel and how their master's degree provided them with this new opportunity. They’re a great example of how you can study the course from an unrelated field and succeed in this exciting industry. We wish them well in furthering their research and making a positive impact on industries using AI.”
