Music Business students Harvey Cecil and Sasha Sinkler took home a trophy at Southampton Film Week 2024, winning Best Music Video together with co-director Helen Burdfield.
After working with up-and-coming band Fred Lane as part of a documentary assignment, the team were recruited to direct and produce a high-quality music video for Fred Lane's single The One - shot on location in Southampton.
"I am incredibly proud to have won this award," Harvey said. "Having only truly discovered my creativity since coming to university, being involved in such an amazing project with such a talented group of people was rewarding enough on its own. Winning this award has helped recognise the hard, but enjoyable, work of everyone involved, as well as the talent of Fred Lane."
Solent's approach to learning and teaching means music students not only have an opportunity to collaborate with musicians and creatives in the city but are actively encouraged to build those professional connections.Â
"My course has definitely brought out the creative side in me," Harvey said, "as well as the confidence to be able to attempt a project like that. I just feel an all-round more confident person since joining Solent and have had so many opportunities to really test myself and put myself in spaces I would never have thought of before."
Music Business at Solent is all about equipping students with the tools they need to thrive in one of the country's most competitive industries. For Sasha, getting involved in Solent Creatives - an on-campus enterprise which gives students the opportunity to work with real-world clients and boost their CVs - has been instrumental during her journey. "I have had so many opportunities to develop my skills in videography and editing through Solent Creatives," Sasha said, "and have been able to connect with a broad network of creative people through my course and other music-related events at Solent."
Ranked in the top 20 for student experience in the Times Good University Guide 2025, the course has seen graduates go on to work at notable companies such as Universal, Spotify and Live Nation. Solent's Course Leader for Music Business, James Hannam, said:
"We're delighted that Sasha and Harvey's music video has been recognised with a well-deserved award. They have both worked hard during their three years at Solent - not only on their academic work, but on gaining external contacts and work experience opportunities."
