Cultural Quarter exhibition celebrates art students at Solent

20 March 2025

On Friday 28 March, Anomalous - an exhibition of artworks created by BA (Hons) Fine Art students at Southampton Solent University - opens to the public in the city's Guildhall Square.

Every year, a cohort of second-year Fine Art undergraduates display their work at a public exhibition housed in shipping containers on Guildhall Square. The setting pays tribute to Southampton's rich maritime history, while the exhibition itself shines a spotlight on emerging artistic talent in the city.

Anomalous, meaning in opposition with the expected course of things, celebrates artwork created by Fine Art students at Solent, showcasing different approaches and themes. This year's exhibition also features a piece of performance art, which city residents are invited to get involved in. Fine Art undergrad, Pixie Moon, says:

"It's all been an experience; organising a show together and a first foray into performance art. This exhibit has definitely been challenging but an exciting opportunity I'm glad to be part of as it broadens our horizons as working artists."

Anomalous has been curated entirely by students, who will be at the exhibition across the six days, giving the public an opportunity to hear more about their practice and the concept behind this year's exhibition. Second-year Fine Art student, Owen Douglass says:

"Exhibiting in a public facing manner for the first time is such an exciting opportunity to gain recognition and build connections from collaborating and networking with others."

Southampton Solent University's Anomalous exhibition runs Friday 28 March to Wednesday 2 April, 12 to 6pm. It is free to attend.
