New AI qualification boosts employment prospects for Solent students

Southampton Solent University (Solent) is set to launch a brand-new Certificate in Practical Artificial Intelligence.

By providing the new online course, Solent is aiming to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) in today’s rapidly changing technological landscape.

Available to all students, no matter their chosen area of study, the course is designed to fit around existing commitments and learning, offering flexibility for those seeking to enhance their understanding of AI and improve their future employment options.

Part of Solent's wider commitment to cutting-edge education, the announcement of the new course follows the recent £1.2 million renovation of the university’s computer labs. With the demand for AI skills at an all-time high across various industries, this certification is a valuable addition, aimed at preparing individuals for future careers in AI-driven sectors.

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, Sarah Jones, said:

“We are excited to offer this cutting-edge AI qualification to both our students and staff. At Solent we are placing a strong emphasis on equipping our community with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-evolving employment landscape.

“This course is designed to be accessible, flexible, and highly relevant, giving participants the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in AI whilst enjoying the rest of their practice-led studies.”

The Certificate in Practical Artificial Intelligence provides a comprehensive introduction to AI, covering key concepts and practical applications. Participants will cover:

  • Fundamentals of AI – Learn the history of AI and the key breakthroughs that have shaped its development.
  • Core AI Concepts – Gain an understanding of Machine Learning (ML), types of ML, as well as techniques such as regression, classification, and clustering.
  • AI Technologies and Industry Applications – Discover how AI is transforming industries and reshaping everyday life.
  • Data in AI – Explore key data concepts, including types of data, sources, and methods for collecting, storing, processing, visualising, and analysing data.
  • Generative AI – Understand the fundamentals of Generative AI, its tools, and techniques for practical use.
  • Large Language Models (LLMs) – Grasp the basics of LLMs, which power many modern Generative AI tools.
  • Prompt Engineering – Learn how to effectively interact with Generative AI tools by mastering prompt engineering.
  • Ethical and Professional Considerations – Examine the ethical implications of AI and promote responsible usage.

Developed by Solent’s inhouse academics who specialise in AI, the course will provide those who successfully complete it with an online qualification that will enhance their CVs. All Solent staff are also being invited to complete the course.

Solent is also partnering with IBM to give students the option to gain further digital badges. Whilst completing the new Solent qualification, participants will be invited to complete further complementary courses delivered by IBM at no further cost.
