Pioneering radio station signs Solent DJ

21 January 2025

Proudly boasting lecturers and technical instructors who hold close links within their chosen fields, thus boosting student experiences and opportunities, Southampton Solent University is delighted to share that one of its own has been signed to one of the capital's biggest radio stations.

Steve Middleton, Technician Instructor Audio Production at Solent University, has been signed to Select Radio - one of London's biggest dance music radio stations which also broadcasts in Norwich, Brighton and Bristol.

Specialising in house music, the station first came into being in 2003 and has since amassed a dedicated following in its 20 plus years of broadcasting.

As one of the newest DJs to join Select Radio's impressive roster, Steve joins giants of the genre such as multi-million selling DJ, MK and one of the pioneers of house music, Oliver Heldens. Having worked at Solent for a decade alongside his passion for DJing at festivals and events, Steve weaves his experience behind the decks with his teaching approach at the University.

Known for his commitment to students and their success, Steve has a reputation for encouraging learners to explore opportunities in the industry. Steve has championed hundreds of students across a range of creative courses and, recently, played at Camp Bestival. Determined to involve students in a bid to enrich their learning, Steve recruited the support of a BSc (Hons) Live Event Technology undergrad who managed the lighting for his set. This hands-on experience gave the student a competitive edge to their CV, thanks to Steve's collaborative approach to teaching coupled with his sought-after industry networks.

On his latest move, Steve says:

"I'm super excited to be onboard and to get a prime-time slot on Select Radio. I've been an avid listener for many years now, and to host my own show on the station is absolutely brilliant.

"My first show is on Sunday 9 February and I'll be hosting shows bi-weekly from there. I can't wait to get going and start building on my shows, and each one will be live from London. I'm also really excited to bring my experience in radio into my teaching to support students' real-world learning. I've been into radio now for as long as I can remember and to be broadcasting live on a worldwide scale is really big for me."

At Solent, we know that to ensure success for our students, their teaching and learning - which, in case you missed it, is triple gold ranked by the Teaching Excellence Framework - needs to be guided by experts in their field. Whether it's a course leader, associate lecturer, or technical specialist, students have access to a dedicated staff whose teaching is informed by their vast experiences in industry.

Steve will be live on Select Radio every other Sunday starting 9 February, between 12 and 2pm. Tune in on 97.4FM, via DAB, or online here
