Solent to host Refugee Week event

In recognition of the University’s commitment to becoming a University of Sanctuary, we are holding an event during Refugee Week (20-24 June) exploring the theme of ‘Can safe passage really exist?’

The event is part of the The Wilberforce Dialogue, hosted annually by Solent in recognition of the Wilberforce family, who championed social justice and equality.

Hosted by Professor Peter Lloyd, Dean of Solent’s Faculty of Creative Industries, Architecture and Engineering, on Tuesday 21 June 2022, this community event will explore the lived experiences of those who have secured sanctuary and what safe passage would really mean.

Panellists include:

• Annie Karuimbo, Sanctuary Ambassador with City of Sanctuary, British Red Cross Voice Ambassador & Sanctuary in Politics Graduate.

• Angela Cohen, Chair of the 45 Aid Society.

• Revd. Steve Tinning, Public Issues Enabler, The Baptist Union of Great Britain.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre’s 2021 Global Report on Internal Displacement estimated that in 2020 alone around 40.5 million new displacements were recorded. International media, political policies and local histories can portray and influence our thoughts around what constitutes safe passage from displacement, but can safe passage really exist?
