Southampton Solent University has become an accredited educational partner of BAFTA Albert, an organisation spearheading environmental sustainability in the film and television industry.
Owned by BAFTA and supported by industry, albert is the gold standard for sustainability in the screen industries, providing resources, training and certification to help media professionals reduce their environmental impact.
As one of the most pressing issues of our time, Solent is committed to tackling climate change head on, and the University’s educational partnership with BAFTA Albert will champion eco-friendly practices among film and television students as they look ahead to their professional careers.
Through this partnership, students will benefit from access to BAFTA Albert training, as well as useful industry insights, enhancing their confidence when it comes to implementing greener practices in their careers. A key development is the introduction of a short course led by Course Leader Film and Television, Dr Stuart Joy and Lecturer Film and Television, Dr Adam Vaughan, which 30 students will be invited to participate in as part of a pilot, resulting in their becoming an ‘Albert Grad’, adding weight to their CVs.
Additionally, the University is integrating sustainability-focused topics into its film and media courses, empowering the next generation of film and TV talent to champion environmental responsibility within the industry.
Head of Film and Media at Solent, Will Cope, says:
“This prestigious recognition reinforces the University’s commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to create sustainable content for the small and big screen, while promoting environmentally responsible production practices. The opportunities this accreditation will offer our students align with our practice-led approach to learning and teaching, and I look forward to seeing the impact it has on our student community.”
