Dr Kate Pike
Kate is an associate professor and senior research fellow within the University's Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering. Kate is an experienced maritime researcher focusing on the human side of shipping, particularly seafarers' welfare, gender issues, management and leadership, sustainability, and safety culture. She has recently led the Gender, Empowerment and Multicultural Crews (GEM) Project, sponsored by the ITF Seafarers' Trust, with teams in the UK, China and Nigeria.
Kate's research is predominantly industry-linked to and supports seafarers' welfare and safety - which are vital to the success of the cadets who are trained within the University. Kate is currently leading the Mentoring Seafarers Project, sponsored by the ITF Seafarers' Trust and the Effective Crew Project, sponsored by the Lloyd's Register Foundation and the TK Foundation.

Sarah Honebon
Sarah has recently joined Dr Kate Pike as a research officer within the University's Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering. Sarah completed her BA (Hons) degree in sociology and social policy in 2015 in order to increase her focus and interest in seafarer welfare, safety, and the human element of being at sea.
Sarah has 17 years' sailing experience on high speed craft and conventional ferries, both cross-channel and in France where she started her career as steward and category 3 seaman, leading to senior cabin manager based in St Malo, Brittany. Sarah has been directly involved in mentoring, training and recruitment of all internal crew for 14 years in both the UK and France.
She gained immense benefit by volunteering with Kate in the latter stages of the Gender, Empowerment and Multicultural Crews (GEM) Project, sponsored by the ITF Seafarers' Trust, with teams in the UK, China and Nigeria. Sarah is currently working with Kate and Sue on the Mentoring Seafarers Project, which is sponsored by the ITF Seafarers' Trust.

Sue Harland
Sue went to sea in 1989 and worked for for F. T. Everard and Sons on their fleet of coastal dry cargo vessels and clean product tankers, rising to the rank of chief officer. Subsequent sea service was gained deep sea with Shell and Pritchard Gordon Tankers on oil and gas tankers. She has also worked as a chief officer on a variety of other vessel types, including aggregate and harbour maintenance dredgers, fast craft and conventional ferries.
After leaving the sea, Sue worked at the UK Hydrographic Office for 10 years, where she was the first female editor of Sailing Directions. Subsequent roles included Lights production manager, where she was responsible for producing paper Admiralty List of Lights and the digital ADP product, and one of the Lights experts for the UKHO; deputy publications standards manager, responsible for ensuring international and and national standards in nautical publications; and finally as miscellaneous publications manager with production and editorial responsibility for The Mariner's Handbook, Ocean Passages for the World, and NP5011 Chart Symbols and Abbreviations. Sue also did extensive work on the AVCS vector chart series of ENC folios and was part of the 'Ask Admiralty' panel of experts.
Sue has been a senior lecturer at Warsash Maritime Academy for three years, teaching a range of courses including acting as course leader for the Human Element, Leadership and Management (Operational Level) course. She is also a member of the Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering ethics approval panel.
Sue has recently assisted Dr Lisa Froholdt at the World Maritime University on the Mari-Wel Project and is currently completing an MSc Educational Leadership and Management.
