Biography

Nils is a Course Leader in Engineering at the Department of Science and Engineering at Southampton Solent University. He holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Portsmouth and a Diplom Ingenieur (FH) in Mechatronics from the FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences in Aachen, Germany.

Nils possesses knowledge and experience in electronics, embedded systems, UI/application development, smart homes, sensor technologies, and IoT. His research interests include, amongst others, embedded systems, additive manufacturing, MCDM methods, sensor systems and future electronic and electrical technologies and application, including AI.

Throughout his career, Nils has been involved in various research projects and has secured grants, including funding from GCRF, EPSRC, and Innovate UK. He has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, covering topics such as nuclear power plant control, corrosion detection, and intelligent systems for powered wheelchairs.

Nils is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He serves as an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate courses at a UK higher education institution and is a Professional Registration Assessor with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

With a blend of academic and industry experience, including roles as a software developer and research assistant, Nils brings a wealth of practical knowledge to his teaching and research activities, focusing on applied engineering.

In his academic career, Nils has taught modules in foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes, covering areas such as Engineering Programming, VHDL & FPGA systems, Electronic Engineering, and Introduction to Design. He has experience in both traditional classroom settings and distance learning environments, having worked with mature students to supervise distance learners in engineering and business studies. At Southampton Solent, Nils is teaching on project modules, supervising projects and other modules that capture the entire cohort of engineering students.
